The Institute for Human Development (IHD) has emerged as an important centre for study in issues related to human development. The Institute has made its research contributions across a range of priority areas, such as, labour, employment and livelihoods, poverty, food security, social security, socio-economic exclusion, education, health, and gender.

IHD has conducted over 100 research and evaluation studies. Many of these studies have involved large field surveys and the Institute has the experience of conducting primary data-based studies in most states of India including remote and far-flung areas (North-east, Jammu and Kashmir, etc.) The Institute has conducted extensive surveys both in rural and urban areas and has developed a rich database on human development issues.

Most of these studies have been sponsored by Ministries of the Government of India, the Planning Commission and other reputed national and international organisations and donor agencies with whom IHD maintains long-standing relationships.
