Sacchidananda Mukherjee and Debashis Chakraborty
This paper attempts to analyse the evolving relationship between economic growth and human development for 28 major Indian states during four time periods ranging over the last two decades, viz. 1983, 1993, 1999 - 2000 and 2004- 05. The objective of this exercise is to understand whether per capita income (as an indicator of economic growth) is influenced by human development and vice versa across Indian states. The National Human Development Report 2001 methodology has been applied for constructing the Human Development Index (H D I) for the Indian states. The H D I has been constructed separately for rural and urban are as for each of the states in order to high light the importance of rural–urban disparity in determining human development. The result indicates that per capita income is not strictly being translated into human w ell- being, which should be an are a of concern for the policy- makers. The obtained result also indicates the rising influence of other variables in the determination of the HD achievements of a state.
