Women, Work and Health:Examining Linkages, Addressing Challenges |
Padmini Swaminathan |
This article is part of a larger on-going attempt to approach the theme of women’s health by:
(a) mapping the multi-dimensional nature of their work; (b) addressing the contexts in which
such work is carried out; (c) bringing together women’s perceptions of their well-being, and
(d) analysing these perceptions against macro information for establishing links between ‘work’
and ‘health’. In a context where investments in basic infrastructure are abysmally low, the
combination of household responsibilities and work towards augmenting the household’s income
resulting in long working days, contributes to ‘time famine’ with negative effects on women’s
health and well-being. An important objective of this article is to bring together the findings of
official reports on the theme of Women, Work and Health, which inadvertently corroborate and
accord official recognition to what feminist scholarship and feminist practices on the field have
been highlighting (quite unsuccessfully) for a long time. |
