The Growth-Oriented Micro-Enterprise Development (GMED) program is a project initiated under the USAID/India Micro-Enterprise Development Strategy in India. The major objective of GMED is to link micro and small enterprises into global and domestic value chains and improving their economic well-being. IHD was assigned the task of evaluating the programme in India by the ACDI/VOCA in May 2006, with a view to creating a baseline data base. The survey work was undertaken in six states and covered three sectors, viz. fresh fruits and vegetables, organic food products and municipal solid waste management, covering about 2000 households and more than 85 key informants associated with the programme. The outcome of the study includes clean data sets pertaining to household production and livelihoods patterns, sales, etc, and qualitative reports for three sectors.
