Dr. Taniya Chakrabarty is a sociologist specializing in social inequalities, social mobility, and labour market dynamics. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where her doctoral thesis, Hiring as a Social Process: A Study of Campus Placements in Select Educational Institutions, analyses the social construction of merit through cultural capital, language proficiency, and socio-economic background. She completed her BA in Political Science from Loreto College, University of Calcutta, an MA in Globalization and Labour from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, and a M.Phil in Sociology from Centre for Study of Social Systems (CSSS), JNU. She has previously worked as a Research Associate at the Institute for Human Development (IHD), New Delhi, and contributed to internationally funded projects, co-authored a book with Cambridge University Press, and published policy briefs on labour inequalities in India and Brazil. She has also served as a Senior Manager and Social Science Mentor at Athena Education, teaching research methodology and academic writing and providing structured research mentorship. Her work has been supported by several prestigious fellowships and research grants, including the TISS–MPI Fellowship, the SYLFF Fellowship, and the Tokyo India Foundation SRG Grant, enabling her to conduct extensive primary social science research.
