A K Shiva Kumar (Shiv), a New Delhi based development economist, policy advisor and evaluator, has over the past 40 years, taught economics, undertaken evaluations of social policies and programs, conducted research and policy analysis, worked with governments, international agencies and civil society organizations. He works closely with the UN in India in an advisory role including with the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in India, UNFPA, UNICEF, and UN Women. He is a Commissioner, Lancet Commission on Gender-based Violence and Maltreatment of Young People, and Co-Chair, Know in Violence in Childhood – A Global Learning Initiative. He is a Leadership Council Member of the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) and the Global Women’s Institute, The George Washington University, Washington DC.
Shiv has undertaken thematic evaluations and assessment of country-level development results for the Independent Evaluation Office of UNDP, UNICEF, and WFP, contributed to policy briefs for ILO and UNFPA, and been a regular contributor to global and national Human Development Reports since 1990. He served as Director of UNDP’s International Centre for Human Development in India (2014-15) and as senior policy adviser to UNICEF India (1992-2017). He was also a member of Government of India’s National Advisory Council between 2005-2014. Shiv teaches economics and public policy as a visiting faculty member at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, Young India Fellowship program in Ashoka University (Sonepat, India), and at the Indian School of Business (Hyderabad, India). Shiv has contributed regularly to the global and national Human Development Reports. He has advised and served on the Boards of several NGOs and research organizations including Centre for Science and Environment (India), Institute for Human Development (India), Institute for Rural Development, Anand (India), and the Public Health Foundation of India. He has co-edited three books: “India’s Children: Essays in Social Policy,” “Handbook of Population and Development in India,” and “Handbook of Human Development” – all three published by Oxford University Press.
